Forty men gathered at the Alex Library on Saturday morning, 6 July, at the request of five Izindunas partnering with the Alex men’s forum. Izinduna is a Zulu word which means leader or advisor. Izinduna were advisors to the chiefs and kings and are highly regarded.

  • The meeting was called by the Izindunas to hear more about the NOEXCUSE programme and FAN as they had heard reports of great work being done by them in their community.

  • The meeting was opened in prayer by Pastor Sokhela and then Chaired by Mr Charles Mphephu from the Alex men’s forum.

  • Charles started by sharing some of the difficulties they are having as men of Alex and how a platform like this one could help a lot of men.

  • Craig was given a chance to speak and he expressed how honoured he was to be invited by the Izinduna as they were regarded as very wise and highly esteemed people. He then spoke about the importance of the role of men and fathers in families, community and the nation.

  • The Izinduna spoke about how in days past the older men were responsible for teaching younger men how to behave and keeping them in order. They emphasised the importance of mentoring the next generation to ensure values were instilled and order maintained.

  • Sipho Khohlakala was the last speaker from the Alex Men’s Forum and spoke of the importance of men talking and solving our problems together and not resorting to violence. He then directed his talk to the people in the Taxi industry where a lot of blood is shed and asked that if one day we could try and face that problem.

  • The meeting closed on a positive note with a vote of thanks and commitment to work together.
